Making Tax Digital is Coming – Here’s What You Need to Know

From April 2026, the way many self-employed people and landlords report their tax will change. HMRC is bringing in Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax.

Who will it affect?

  • April 2026: If you earn over £50,000 from self-employment or property.

  • April 2027: If you earn over £30,000.

  • More people will be included in later years.

What’s changing?

  • You’ll need to use HMRC-approved bookkeeping software.

  • You’ll send quarterly updates instead of one big tax return.

  • There will still be a final year-end declaration.

Why does this matter?

  • Less risk of mistakes.

  • A clearer picture of your tax throughout the year.

  • But – more frequent reporting and the need for digital records.

  • Check if your income is over the threshold.

  • Start using MTD-compatible software.
