Making Tax Digital is Coming – Here’s What You Need to Know
From April 2026, the way many self-employed people and landlords report their tax will change. HMRC is bringing in Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax.
Who will it affect?
April 2026: If you earn over £50,000 from self-employment or property.
April 2027: If you earn over £30,000.
More people will be included in later years.
What’s changing?
You’ll need to use HMRC-approved bookkeeping software.
You’ll send quarterly updates instead of one big tax return.
There will still be a final year-end declaration.
Why does this matter?
Less risk of mistakes.
A clearer picture of your tax throughout the year.
But – more frequent reporting and the need for digital records.
